Announced almost 3 months ago on June 10, Who Is The Sky? is now available as of Friday, September 5! This is David Byrne's first studio album since American Utopia in 2018, which led to a long run of live performances, with a world tour and Broadway residency that ended in March 2022.
Who Is The Sky? is a collaborative album with Ghost Train Orchestra, a brass ensemble with jazz leanings, and features production by Kid Harpoon, who has previously worked with artists such as Harry Styles, Miley Cyrus, and Maggie Rogers. Recording sessions took place throughout 2024, with a bulk of recording taking place in two pairs of sessions in May and September at Power Station Studios in New York City. The song "What Is The Reason For It?" features Hayley Williams of Paramore, and "Everybody Laughs" has backing vocals by St. Vincent, who released the album Love This Giant with David Byrne in 2012 and has collaborated with him on other occasions. In addition to those two songs, the album included singles "She Explains Things To Me" and "The Avant Garde". Other highlights include "Moisturizing Thing", "My Apartment Is My Friend", and "I Met The Buddha at a Downtown Party". On Apple Music, the album includes "DefCon", a short instrumental, as an exclusive 13th track.
Early listening parties for the album took place on Thursday at record stores around the world, as well as a special listening party on Tuesday at Rough Trade NYC. Promoted as a listening party with David Byrne in attendance, the event actually turned out to be a listening party followed by the debut performance by Byrne's new touring band, filmed to be shown on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday night. The band performed two songs from the album, "What Is The Reason For It?" and "Everybody Laughs", as well as a Talking Heads classic, "Houses in Motion".
